1. Had. The word is had. Had done. Had known. Had shot the author in the throat. For the love of literature, use the right goddamn tense. 2. Multiple punctuation is only okay in chat speak, LOLspeak, or when otherwise used ironicly. Putting double question marks at the end of a sentence does not emphasize the question, it makes you look like an idiot. You are an intelligent adult, do not write like you are in highschool. 3. Semicolon: the punctuation mark (;) used to indicate a major division in a sentence where a more distinct separation is felt between clauses or items on a list than is indicated by a comma, as between the two clauses of a compound sentence. (dictionary.com) You are not Virginia Wolfe; you are bound by the same grammatical rules as the rest of us mere mortals. If you can't use a semicolon correctly, don't. 3a. Commas, on the other hand, while occassionally tricky, are your friends. I can loan you my copy of Strunk and White, and I know the bookstore carries Eats Shoots and Leaves. Seriously. Not that difficult. Really need an angry editor icon. |
